Mobile Video In Focus For Users And Investors: Animoto Picks Up $25 Million
It’s well known that video services account for some of the most intensive use of mobile data networks—and while some of that is down to how large video files can be, it is also because mobile video happens to be very popular, too. Now one of the startups working in that space, Animoto, is showing that this is driving investors to the medium as well. Today it’s announcing that it is picking up $25 million, in what looks to be its first injection of cash in nearly two years.

Comcast’s Brian Roberts Demos Xfinity TV, 1 Gig Speed
One of the perks of being the nation’s largest cable operator: a general session demo slot. Comcast (NSDQ: CMCSA) Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts used the time for a demo of one technology the company hadn’t yet decided how to deploy—1 Gbps downloads over a cable modem, which we were first to report. But most of the demo went to Xfinity TV features already used in Comcast’s Augusta, Ga. system, including nimble and robust search, apps and DVR management. One new feature is on the way: Facebook Friend Trends, crowd-sourced programming recommendations. Check out the video, embedded below.

@ Cable Show: Netflix And Hulu On Cable Set Tops?
Cable operators already deliver Netflix (NSDQ: NFLX) and Hulu over broadband but could the services now perceived as competitors wind up as part of the cable package? Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) Chief Programming Officer Melinda Witmer sees it as a natural fit for two services that she views more as programmers than distributors.

Our Next Conference: paidContent Advertising, Sept. 15, NYC
The online advertising scene has changed considerably since we held our last conference focusing entirely on the advertising industry: cross-platform is more than a catchphrase; Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has moved far beyond AdSense; Facebook is a major player; Twitter and Foursquare are shaking up the scene; Groupon set off a daily deals craze; the rise of apps, led by Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), has added a new twist to mobile; tablets are a new rich environment with subscription potential; privacy has taken center stage and advertisers are creating their own content, while agencies continue to morph as they search for the right way to serve a continuously shifting space. Each raises a set of questions amid a constant search for best practices.
And yet many of the challenges remain the same: how to create and sell the right kind of inventory; how to make the most of the ability to gather data and target customers; whether to rely on ad networks, how to engage consumers, and how to make digital dollars add up to the money leaving the traditional media world. Almost daily, it seems, a new business launches trying to take advantage of the changes and solve the challenges.
At paidContent Advertising: Emerging Business Models on Sept. 15 in NYC, we’ll bring together leaders and disruptors from across advertising, media and entertainment to explore emerging business models in this changing space – and debate the possible winners and losers.

@ Cable Show: Comcast’s Roberts Shows Off 1Gbps Potential
I was an accidental tourist Tuesday for a small bit of cable internet history, when I decided an after-hours crowd with Comcast (NSDQ: CMCSA) CEO Brian Roberts and converged products head Sam Schwartz at the center was worth an unscheduled stop at the Comcast booth. That’s how I saw Roberts live demo 1Gbps over a consumer network—a first for Comcast and, the company believes, a first overall for an outside-the-lab demo of this sort.
