Penguin’s DK: Goodbye Books, Hello ‘Flat’ Content. Make Once, Use Anywhere
Dorling Kindersley, the division of Penguin that publishes children, travel and reference titles, made a strong case for how it is moving to a “flat” content model, where a printed book is only one of many output options. The digital publisher of DK also said that companies like his need to do this to be ready for the next big thing in books—whatever it is—but as is so often the case for old media industries, the change is “massive” and not easy for everyone in publishing.

Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) is putting a big bet on China, where its products and services have proven hugely popular, but that could also leave it exposed to a few bad beats along the way: the company is currently being sued by a group of Chinese writers, who are accusing the company of copyright infringement over some books on offer in its app store. It’s an ironic turn of events, given that Apple has been battling extensive copyright infringement of its own in the country, in the form of counterfeit products.

Over the years, the Associated Press has made a profile for itself by syndicating its news across thousands of newspapers both in the U.S. and abroad. Now as newspaper readers move to new platforms like tablets to consume their news content, the AP wants to make sure it is syndicating there, too. Today it is announcing a deal with one of the bigger tablet news-reading apps, Pulse, to run AP text, video and photographic coverage via Pulse. It will be the first time the AP will appear within the service.
