Penguin’s DK: Goodbye Books, Hello ‘Flat’ Content. Make Once, Use Anywhere

Dorling Kindersley, the division of Penguin that publishes children, travel and reference titles, made a strong case for how it is moving to a “flat” content model, where a printed book is only one of many output options. The digital publisher of DK also said that companies like his need to do this to be ready for the next big thing in books—whatever it is—but as is so often the case for old media industries, the change is “massive” and not easy for everyone in publishing.

Updated: Exclusive: AP Branches Out, Adds Pulse To Its Digital Mix

Over the years, the Associated Press has made a profile for itself by syndicating its news across thousands of newspapers both in the U.S. and abroad. Now as newspaper readers move to new platforms like tablets to consume their news content, the AP wants to make sure it is syndicating there, too. Today it is announcing a deal with one of the bigger tablet news-reading apps, Pulse, to run AP text, video and photographic coverage via Pulse. It will be the first time the AP will appear within the service.

In Russia, DST’s Mail.ru And Yandex Ramp Up Mobile Presence

Hearst’s Carey: We Will Have One Million Paying Digital Subscribers In 2012

Aussie Court Gives Samsung Galaxy Tab The All-Clear But Is It Too Late?

A reversal of fortunes, of sorts, for Samsung in its ongoing case against Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) in Australia: today, an appeals court unanimously decided that it can go ahead with sales of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet, possibly as soon as Friday. But even with sales getting the all-clear, some analysts seem to have already written off the device as an also-ran.

Mobile Ad Figures Show Android Has Secured Its OS Lead, Apple A Device Lead

Monthly figures out from Millennial Media once again show that Android is the most dominant OS on its mobile ad network—the mobile platform from Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has held that distinction for 11 months now as dozens of Android-based smartphones continue to proliferate the market. But while there are definitely a good handful of handset makers that are benefitting from that Android popularity—HTC and Samsung among them—the handset maker that is still topping the charts for single most-popular device is Apple.
